Scotiabank MARATHON Jr

The Scotiabank MARATHON Jr program is breaking out with a brand new name at this year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, October 20th — created to increase visibility and open up the program to the children at more of Toronto's inner-city elementary schools. Established as Scotiabank MarathonKIDS in 2006, MARATHON Jr is part of Scotiabank and Canada Running Series' core goal of engaging the community, promoting running and healthy lifestyles, and giving back to our neighbourhoods. “Promoting exercise and an active lifestyle is so important,” said Race Director Alan Brookes. “And especially among our young people. MARATHON Jr fits in perfectly with the Scotiabank Charity Challenge and the Scotiabank Neighbourhood Challenge as our key outreach programs at Toronto Waterfront Marathon.”

This year, 15 schools are signed up, putting almost 900 MARATHON Jrs on the road to fitness. Here's how the program works:

  • Immediately after school restarts following Labour Day, MARATHON Jrs are supplied with a souvenir Training Certificate, to log their runs with teachers and parents (see below)
  • The plan is to run 37km by October 19th. (a few kilometres each day)
  • On Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon day the kids are bused to the Start of the STW 5K, along with teachers and some parents. They run the 5K and hey presto, 37k + 5k = 42k and the kids are true MARATHON Jrs!
  • All MARATHON Jrs also receive:
    • A quality technical t-shirt
    • A MARATHON Jr Finishers' medal
    • Post-race food and a Scotiabank goody bag
    • A chance to meet some of the Canadian and international stars in the marathon.

ALL expenses are covered through Scotiabank sponsorship, so the program is entirely free to the children and the schools.

“Coming as it does at the beginning of the school year, it's our hope that this month of MARATHON Jr running, climaxed by the opportunity to cross the same finish line as 25,000 other runners from 60 countries, plus some of Canada's and the world's best, will kick-start a year of healthy living. We hope it will be inspirational to Toronto's children, and provide some positive role models,” said John Doig, Scotiabank, Chief Marketing Officer.
