Key Volunteer/Manager Job Descriptions

Volunteer Check-in Manager

You will be responsible for helping with the setup of the volunteer check-in area and checking in up to 1,000 volunteers/handing out t-shirts to the volunteers, signing off volunteer letters, and helping to tear down and clean up the volunteer check-in area. A site visit prior to the event may be required for this position.

Volunteer Check-in Hospitality

You will be responsible for helping with the setup of the volunteer hospitality area, distributing food to up to 1,000 volunteers, as well as helping tear down and clean up the volunteer hospitality area.

Volunteer Escort

You will be responsible for helping with the setup and organization of the Volunteer Escort Area, escorting hundreds of volunteers from the volunteer check-in area to their volunteer location, and returning all volunteer escort signage to the volunteer check-in tent before leaving. A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Packet Pickup Supervisor

You will be responsible for locating participants' race bibs and timing chips, distributing goodie bags and providing race information.

T-shirt Distribution Supervisor

You will be assisting with organizing and issuing the technical race shirts to participants.

5k Greeter Manager

You will be assigned to a group of approximately 20 volunteers who will act as "Greeters" — answering questions from runners and spectators from a list of Frequently Asked Questions. Tasks include distributing clipboards containing site maps and FAQs, ensuring Greeters understand the information provided, especially key areas indicated on the maps, positioning Greeters according to a pre-determined plan, checking-in with Greeters and assessing needs regularly. A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Baggage Manager

You will be responsible for managing volunteers assigned to the Baggage Check Area. You will need to supervise the volunteers and make sure they are checking in the bags properly and sorting them in the tent in the correct numerical order, and handing the bags back to the correct people, as well as assisting with the tear down and clean-up of the Baggage Check Area. Baggage Managers working on Race Day (Sunday, October 19, 2014) must also commit to setting up the area on Saturday, October 18, 2014.

Finish Line Supervisor

You will be positioned in the finish chute (either before or after the finish line) to assist with participant and/or pedestrian marshaling. This will be a very exciting and busy area so we are looking for enthusiastic and confident volunteers who are comfortable working with people! A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Food Supervisor

You will be responsible for a group of volunteers who will be re-stocking and handing out food to runners after the race. Tasks include assigning specific roles to volunteers, supervising the set-up of the food area, ensuring adequate amounts of food are available at all times and the station is running smoothly and assisting with clean-up. A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Elite Athlete Doping Chaperone

You will be responsible for picking-up top winners up from the finish line, and ensuring they get to their required areas at specified times (includes Doping Control, Awards Ceremony & Press Conference). Advise winners that they have been selected for drug testing, and chaperone athlete to doping control centre. A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Elite Athlete Supervisor

You will be responsible for picking-up top winners up from the finish line, and ensuring they get to their required areas at specified times (includes Awards Ceremony & Press Conference). A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Start Corral Supervisor
OR 5k Corral Supervisor

You will be assigned to one of the colour coded start corrals and will be responsible for a small group of student volunteers (6–12). You will supervise the entrance to the corral, ensuring only assigned participants enter the corral area. This will be a very exciting and busy area so we are looking for enthusiastic and confident volunteers who are comfortable working with people! A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Start Wave Supervisor
OR 5k Wave Supervisor

You will be assigned to one of the colour coded start corrals and will be responsible for a small group of student volunteers (6–12). The participants will be starting in 5 waves, a few minutes apart. You will supervise the front of the wave and keep the participants in position until it is their turn to start. This will be a very exciting and busy area so we are looking for enthusiastic and confident volunteers who are comfortable working with people! A mandatory site visit prior to the event date is required for this position.

Driver

We are looking for qualified volunteers to drive event vehicles along the course. Applicants MUST be 25+ years of age and have a valid Class G Ontario Drivers Licence. Drivers will be paired with another volunteer to pick-up participants along the route who are unable to finish the race. Knowledge of Toronto streets is an asset. At least one mandatory pre-race meeting is required for training purposes. Please let us know if you have current First Aid & CPR training.

Marshal Manager

You will be responsible for managing all of the volunteer marshals in your area — traveling by bike back and forth along the course throughout the day. You must ensure there is a volunteer marshal located at all key points in your section and follow the outlined protocol if there is not. After the last runner has gone by the 1st marshal location in your area, you will start re-collecting all the marshal vests from the volunteers & dismiss them. After you've dismissed the last marshal, you will need to hand back all the marshal vests at the closest water station. Requirements: You must have your own bike or the use of a bike on race day (Sunday, October 19, 2014). A site visit prior to race day (date TBC) is required to cycle your section of the course and go over any "hot spots" to look out for on race day.
